At the time of the procedure the doctor will bandage the area, keep the bandage on and dry for 24 hours. You can expect some tenderness, particularly with pressure such as a tight-fitting shoe, for a day or two following the procedure. Pain can be managed with Tylenol.
Soaking solution: Mix one tablespoon of Epsom salt with every quart of warm water used.
24 hours after procedure: Begin first soak with bandage on for about 5 minutes until bandage is loosened, then remove bandage and continue soaking for additional 15 minutes.
Further instructions: Soak the area for up to 20 minutes twice a day (morning and evening). Following each soak, dry the area with a clean towel and cover with a clean fabric bandaid, do not apply any ointments.
Continue soaking as directed until all drainage has stopped, usually up to a week. You can determine this by checking the bandage when you take it off; if there is anything on the bandage, there is still drainage.
