Diabetes & Your Feet

There are many complications associated with diabetes. When affecting the feet, these complications can have severe consequences. Due to numbness in the feet, compromised blood flow, and poor wound-healing, small blisters or cuts can put feet at risk for infection and even amputation. To avoid serious foot problems, here are a few simple guidelines:

• Inspect feet daily.
• Avoid walking barefoot
• Protect feet from extreme temperatures.
• Schedule periodic foot exams for care of toenails, corns, and calluses.
• Wash feet and moisturize daily; avoid lotions or creams between toes.
• Work with your Primary Care Provider to keep blood sugars well-controlled and establish an individual exercise program.
